RABEPRAZOLE-20 MG & DOMPERIDONE-30 MG CAPSULES

Rabeprazole 20 mg and Domperidone 30 mg capsules are a combination medication used to treat certain gastrointestinal conditions. Here's a breakdown of the two components:

  1. Rabeprazole 20 mg:
  • Drug Class: Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI).
  • Mechanism of Action: Rabeprazole reduces stomach acid production by inhibiting the proton pump in the stomach lining.
  • Uses:
    • Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
    • Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis.
    • Treatment of conditions involving excessive stomach acid (e.g., Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).
    • Used in combination with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori infections.
  • Side Effects:
    • Headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
    • Rarely, long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, or kidney issues.
  1. Domperidone 30 mg:
  • Drug Class: Dopamine antagonist (prokinetic agent).
  • Mechanism of Action: Domperidone enhances stomach and intestinal motility by blocking dopamine receptors in the gut. It also acts as an antiemetic (prevents nausea and vomiting).
  • Uses:
    • Relief of nausea and vomiting.
    • Management of bloating, discomfort, and heartburn associated with delayed gastric emptying.
  • Side Effects:
    • Dry mouth, headache, diarrhea, abdominal cramps.
    • Rarely, it may cause cardiac arrhythmias or extrapyramidal symptoms (movement disorders).

Combination Use:

This combination is often prescribed for:

  • Acid-related disorders (e.g., GERD) where reduced acid production and improved gastric motility are needed.
  • Symptomatic relief of nausea, bloating, and heartburn.

Important Considerations:

  • Contraindications: Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to either drug, severe liver impairment, or conditions like prolactinoma.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Rabeprazole may interact with drugs like ketoconazole, atazanavir, and warfarin.
    • Domperidone may interact with QT-prolonging drugs, antifungals, and antibiotics.
  • Precautions:
    • Use with caution in patients with a history of cardiac issues (domperidone may prolong QT interval).
    • Long-term use of PPIs like rabeprazole should be monitored for potential side effects.

Dosage:

  • Typically, one capsule is taken once daily before a meal, or as directed by a healthcare provider.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting or stopping this medication to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your condition.
